Luciano Frizzera, PhD
Critical AI & Platform Studies Scholar
Web Developer + UX Designer

I am currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Social Media Lab at Toronto Metropolitan University. My research sits at the intersection of Critical AI, Platform Studies, and Science and Technology Studies (STS), and combines traditional methodologies with innovative approaches such as digital methods, critical code studies to examine how digital platforms and AI operate as discourse tied to broader power structures, with particular attention to a Global South perspective.
My primary research concerns the political economy of subjectivation driven by AI and digital platforms. I am interested in the political and social implications of AI, datafication, and hyper-nudges, and in understanding how algorithmic mediation produces subjects and reorganizes life. At the Social Media Lab, this work extends into two strands: a multi-platform study of how generative AI is reshaping the production, circulation, and reception of visual content, and research on digital narratives and counter-narratives surrounding migration and immigration policy.
I am also an experienced web developer and UI/UX designer. I have produced scripts for data collection and transformation, as well as interactive interfaces for data visualization, semantic text editors, games, and websites.
